BENEFITING: AIDS Healthcare Foundation
Children of the Harbor is a documentary film that focuses on the personal struggles of HIV+ children living at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School. The children living at the school are innocent victims of widespread stigma and discrimination. They have been alienated from their peers, banished by their own villages, separated from their families, and/or denied the right to pursue an education within the Chinese public school system—because they are HIV+. As a result, the Children have no choice but to attend the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School, a boarding school specifically for children living with HIV/AIDS. By sharing the stories of these courageous children we will raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in China and increase empathy for HIV+ people worldwide.
What We Have Done
Since May 2014 we have taken two trips to China, captured over 60 hours of footage, built strong partnerships with the HIV+ children living at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School, their guardians, the school’s directors, and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation—a supporter of the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School. Importantly, we secured the legal rights and consent to film the children living at the Green Harbor Red-Ribbon School. This means we are the only film team capable of delivering this critically important documentary film.
Why We Need Your Help
We will document the lives of 4 students over the next two years until they graduate from the Red-Ribbon School and enter mainstream Chinese society. In order to complete the film we need to take numerous trips to China. We also need to buy equipment, maintain a website, and hire people to translate. All of these things cost money. While many people have donated their time and skills to bring us to this point, we cannot move forward and complete the film without raising funds. This is why we need your help. We are asking for $20,000—all of which will go directly toward production of the film. Every donation, no matter how small, is a tax-deductible contribution toward ending HIV/AIDS stigma.
The Future of Children of the Harbor
Children of the Harbor will be broadcasted through all the major video streaming services in China, including Yoku, Sohu, and Tencent. We also hope to find a distributor in the U.S. Any profits made from this film will go directly toward educating and training children living with HIV/AIDS.
