BENEFITING: WE Charity Canada
EVENT DATE: Mar 12, 2017
My name is Chiara Picao. I’m 15 years old and passionate about girls’ education and Human Rights in general. I started my campaign “Literally Climbing Mountains for Girls Education” when I was 12 years old. My hope is that by getting out of my physical comfort zone and challenging myself to climb mountains I will bring awareness to equal access to education for girls and human rights around the world. In 2013, I successfully climbed the tallest mountain in Portugal – Mt. Pico in the Azores.
Now I’m ready to take the biggest challenge I’ve faced yet. So, on March 12, 2017 I will be travelling to Tanzania and will be climbing the tallest mountain in Africa – Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Inspired by Malala Yousafzai a 14-year-old girl from Pakistan who was shot in the head because she stood up for her right to an education, I realized how privileged I was in Canada. When I saw the footage of Malala being carried away on a stretcher just because she wanted to go to school, I was angry and knew something had to be done. I decided I was going to do something to help girls have equal access to education.
In addition, I have been lucky enough to be part of the We Organization (www.we.org) who work extremely hard to inspire youth to make positive change both in their local and global communities. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend multiple WE Day events and have travelled to Kenya to see the work that is being done on the ground to ensure girls have equal access to education. Therefore, I am really honored to be able to raise money that will go to WE Organization’s all girls’ high schools in the Masai Mara of Kenya. I have seen first-hand the direct impact education has made to empower this community. By ensuring these girls have access to an education, we are giving them a world of opportunity and this will help their communities become sustainable.
