The Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio (CPCO) is located in the Livingston United Methodist Church and licensed by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy. Staff includes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and a patient services manager. Three pharmacists recently became Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacists to better meet the needs of an aging patient population.

Services include medications and pharmacy services at no charge, monitoring of chronic health conditions, counseling on proper medication usage, social program assistance, health screenings, and health and wellness education. In addition to serving patients in healthcare crisis, CPCO works to avoid further emergencies. It is the only pharmacy in central Ohio that qualifies patients for up to 12 months of pharmacy services, providing continuity of care. This continuity is especially important for patients with multiple clinical conditions requiring ongoing medication and services.

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is an integral pharmacy service that distinguishes the charitable pharmacy model from other programs offering prescription medicine at no charge. At each regular (typically monthly) visit, patients meet one-on-one with a pharmacist or a senior pharmacy intern to receive extensive medication counseling and health assessments. Check-up components include the following: 1) assess the appropriateness of their current medication regimen, 2) check blood glucose and blood pressure as needed, 3) determine adherence and potential issues with adverse effects and medication access, 4) create an action plan to share with physicians and other health care professionals to help maximize the patient’s medications, and 5) provide links to other social service agencies.

In 2015, CPCO was named one of “5 Nonprofits to Watch” by The Columbus Foundation in honor of its innovative approaches to meet the pharmaceutical needs of our most vulnerable citizens. In 2018, CPCO gained national recognition for its efforts when the Pharmacy Quality Alliance and the Community Pharmacy Foundation recognized it with the inaugural award for Community Pharmacy Innovations, which celebrates a community pharmacy that has developed innovative programs resulting in improved quality of care and medication optimization.
