Central American Legal Assistance (CALA),, is a very small non-profit organization that has been operating out of the basement of a church in Brooklyn, NY since 1986. CALA opened its doors to serve the thousands of war refugees fleeing Central America and facing deportation back to countries where they faced civil war and massacre. Today, CALA is one of the city's largest providers of no-cost and low-cost deportation defense in the New York Immigration Court (the busiest Immigration Court in the country). CALA clients are indigent immigrants facing deportation to Central and South American countries where they fear persecution or torture, many of whom are survivors of torture and trauma already. They are community activitists, local politicians, LGBT individuals, women fleeing domestic and gender-based violence and members of the community who have refused to bend to the power of transnational criminal organizations operating in their home country.
CALA is a small organization operating on a small annual budget. Its limited resources go entirely to serving as many indigent immigrants as possible, leaving none left over for hosting large "galas" or other fundraisers. Because of this, the efforts of people like me are essential to supporting this important work and every dollar I raise is stretched to the maximum to serve a very vulnerable population.
