Center for Inspired Teaching cultivates changemaking educators who authentically engage their students as active learners and empathetic critical thinkers, and empower students to be changemakers in their communities.
Students deserve an education that prepares them to thrive in our rapidly changing world, and educators need the tools, methods, and mindsets to facilitate that kind of education. A conventional, compliance-based system can’t do this. It positions teachers as the ultimate authority and students rarely contribute their own expertise or opinions. The curriculum is disconnected from students’ interests and context because it’s often scripted. Perhaps most troubling, compliance-based education undermines student agency - the very quality that will enable them to be proactive, lifelong problem solvers.
We define an excellent education as students excelling in the 4 I’s: Intellect, Inquiry, Imagination, and Integrity. To achieve these outcomes, we believe teaching and learning in schools should be built around five Core Elements: Mutual Respect; Student as Expert; Purpose, Persistence, and Action; Joy; and Wide-Ranging Evidence of Student Learning. Through our teacher preparation and professional learning programs, we help teachers embed these elements across content areas and grade levels. Students and teachers have real responsibility, make important decisions, experiment, take risks, and return home each day knowing that they have engaged in meaningful work.
