Every Child has a story; Read Camila's story and why you should get involved with CASA of Santa Barbara County.
Camila's was ten-years-old when her advocate came into her life. Her mother had mental health issues and it was impossible for her to properly care for Camila and her three siblings. For an entire year, the four children missed school.
After being removed from her mother's care and placed in a foster home, Camila returned to school. Initially, she was placed in the age appropriate grade but wasn’t able to perform well. Her advocate was able to work with the school to develop a plan to both allow her to stay at her grade level, as well as to make up her deficits. Michelle advocated for tutoring. But educational advocacy was not the only need Camila had—she also needed a permanent home. Again through the advocacy and efforts of her advocate she now has a legal guardian and is a happy, well-adjusted preteen excited to start Junior High School next year.
