BENEFITING: FRIENDS OF THE VERONA STREET ANIMAL SHELTER
EVENT DATE: Jun 07, 2014
For those of you who knew Hattie - we are once again supporting VSAS and Rochester Animal Services (RAS) in memory of Hattie. She was a severely abused dog found by the RAS animal control officers. We are forever grateful for the shelter taking an extra step in giving us a call to see if we could take her into rescue. Without that call, she would have been put to sleep due to the condition she was in. Her recovery was quicker than anyone could have imagined and she turned out to be an incredible addition to our household.
We adopted Binx from Rochester Animal Services on October 24, 2012 which was coincidentally the anniversary date of Hattie's adoption from RAS. Binx was a special needs dog, he was blind from Cataracts. Our plan was to provide him corrective surgery and then place him in a forever home. Things didn't go as planned (his surgery was not successful – he is still blind), we are happy to say, however, that he is a permanent member of our family.
The purpose of the event is to raise funds and awareness for the Animal Services Center and the Verona Street Animal Society (VSAS). Animal Services is the municipal animal care and control agency in the City of Rochester and it handles over 6,000 dogs and cats each year. Although some 2,500 pets are reunited with their owners, adopted into new homes, or transferred to other animal rescue groups for additional chances of adoption, thousands are humanely euthanized because the intakes exceed those outcomes.
Animal Services is committed to increasing live releases. The key to doing so involves a combination of promoting adoptions from shelters, community education on responsible pet ownership, targeted spay and neuter, and broad-scale microchip identification. The VSAS supports Animal Services by raising funds to help subsidize the spay/neuter program, promote adoptions, and purchase microchips.
Your team contributions will help save lives by reducing numbers of unwanted litters, increasing adoptions and reuniting more missing pets with their owners.
