campJacob is an annual retreat offered to the residents of St-Vincent's Center for Handicapped Children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Campers are brought to a beach resort on the northwestern coast of Haiti, 1.5 hours from Port-au-Prince and receive a variety of medical therapies and life skills programming such as creative arts therapy, physical therapy, aquatics and sports. Counselors from the United States and Canada host the camp over 8 days. Camp Jacob removes the barriers of the camper’s day-to-day lives that are often restricted due to lack of accessibility, funding, and social stigma. Camp Jacob provides life skills training that increase self-esteem and encourages engagement with Haitian society and the world beyond. Each camp builds off the continuity of the previous year’s camp. We continue to work with the youth year round to ensure the skills they have learned are being used in their daily lives. Medical therapies offered provide the medical care necessary to build their self-confidence and self-worth, the groundwork for independent living.
