Habitat for Humanity Building Trip - Guatemala 2012

This December I will be concluding my studies at Boston University’s College of Communication with a Master’s in Public Relations and Non-Profit Management.
In January I will be travelling to Guatemala as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village program. There, I’ll be working side-by-side with my peers as well as with Guatemalan families who are currently homeless or who live in “homes” that consist of pieced together scraps of cardboard and tin. The goal of our work in Guatemala is to get one step closer to fulfilling Habitat for Humanity’s mission of eliminating “poverty housing and homelessness from the world” by building a house from start to finish for an underprivileged Guatemalan family.
After this build in Guatemala, I plan to relocate to Miami, Florida to volunteer with an organization called Hope for Miami (formerly the Family & Children Faith Coalition of South Florida). Hope for Miami helps South Florida communities flourish by providing family-nurturing programs and by strengthening organizations to better serve others through consulting services, seminars and workshops. They also run several youth oriented programs themselves such as SUCCESS, an after school program that works with disabled teens, and Children of Inmates, one of the few programs in the country that serves children with incarcerated parents ensuring their academic, professional and personal success. With Hope for Miami I will be offering the non-profits they work with the professional public relations and non-profit management skills I’ve acquired at Boston University on a pro-bono consulting basis. I will also be volunteering my time and skills to support the SUCCESS and Children of Inmates programs by spending time with the kids and writing collateral for the programs.
In order to execute these plans I am raising about $2,000 in funds to cover the cost of building materials for Habitat for Humanity as well as programmatic and logistical support for work related to Hope for Miami. I'm hoping to put together a team of supporters to donate $25-$200 each by January 1st, 2012. I'd like to ask you to consider becoming part of that team and following my journey and work in Central America and Miami with undeserved communities, children and families.
Thanks in advance for your support and interest in giving back!
