We’ve all seen the statistics: 20% of women, 7% of men, and many trans and gender-nonconforming students will be sexually assaulted while at college. Even though 85% of survivors know their assailant, only 4% will ever report to college administrators, campus security, local law enforcement, or other authorities.

In August 2015, the nonprofit Sexual Health Innovations (SHI) launched Callisto, a web-based college sexual assault recording and reporting tool developed in partnership with survivors, at University of San Francisco and Pomona College. Callisto is the first of its kind of technology: an information escrow that allows survivors to create a record of their assault and store it securely, submit an official electronic report to campus authorities if they wish to do so, and/or opt into the “matching escrow” which enables survivors to report only if another person reports the same assailant. Repeat perpetrators commit 90% of assaults, but if we stopped them after their second, we would prevent 60% of sexual assaults.

Callisto also connects survivors with local and national support resources that support their healing. And Callisto helps survivors learn about their institutions’ unique sexual misconduct policies and investigative procedures.
