Janae is a sophomore in high school who is looking to pursue an internship this summer and is interested in journalism, medicine and forensic science. She is involved her school's art club and community service group and knows conversational ASL. She also participates in our "Spotlight on Me" program and serves as a "HerStory" Peer Leader for Middle School students at the Beginning with Children Charter School. She is looking forward to gaining general work experience.
Donations will help Janae work at his dream internship and cover living and other essential costs while working during the summer.
Founded two decades ago, the Beginning with Children Foundation has educated over 1,500 Brooklyn children in grades K-8. Our schools offer an innovative and rigorous curriculum and emphasize social and emotional development of the whole child. We support our K-8 "graduates" in their high school and college years with a comprehensive academic and career oriented Alumni Program.
90% of our Alumni graduate high school in four years, versus 66% for New York City. All of our Alumni are accepted to 2 and 4-year colleges, and typically receive half a million dollars in scholarship funding. Our Alumni Program includes academic tutoring, Regents and SAT Prep, college application support, campus visits, career panels, job shadowing opportunities and corporate mentoring programs.
A hallmark of the Alumni Program is our summer internship program. After a rigorous training course, BwCF places students at summer jobs with local non-profits and corporations. Students are exposed to fields of interest, to the norms of the professional world, and have the opportunity to develop greater independence and personal accountability.
