Entering its 6th year, BRYTE (Brown Youth Tutoring Enrichment) Summer Camp serves over one hundred refugee youth ages 6 – 16. For five weeks in the summer, campers spend their mornings engaging in hands-on, ELL-focused (English Language Learners) academics taught in small groups of 8-12 students. Morning classes emphasize joyful, project-based learning and are each taught by a team of instructors that includes an ELL-certified teacher, a college-aged senior counselor, and a high school-aged junior counselor. Our instructional and administrative staff is increasingly comprised of camp alumni and other refugee youth and young adults. In the afternoons, students participate in enrichment activities, including soccer, dance, knitting, swimming at the local pool, and field trips to a wide array of educational sites across the city.
Each year BRYTE Summer camp has seen tremendous growth from the year before. In 2015, BRYTE Summer Camp began a partnership with Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island , the Providence Public School District ), and the Brown University Swearer Center for Public Service. This partnership facilitated many high-impact changes to camp. Just to name a few, we welcomed a school nurse and clinical social worker to the team; we launched the BRYTE Leadership Institute for high-literacy middle and high schoolers who demonstrate leadership qualities; and we held a Family Literacy class on site so that parents could study English right down the hall from their students.
Our values, however, remain the same. Our community is built on asset-based, joyful learning; community participation and family engagement; youth leadership; and a deep commitment to creating a space for students can celebrate their identities and build friendships across common experiences of migration, resettlement, and adjustment to a new environment.
Over the years, BRYTE Summer Camp has amassed a community of incredibly generous supporters, without whom none of this work would be possible. No matter small or large, each donation goes a long way toward purchasing supplies for our classrooms, busing for field trips, stipends for counselors, and more. Every year we are blown away by the generosity and enthusiasm of our donors, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support of our absolutely incredible students.
