Every day, thousands of poor people languish in New York City jails because they cannot afford bail — even when bail is as low as $500. The overwhelming majority are facing misdemeanor charges. Research shows that people who are detained awaiting trial face significantly worse case outcomes than those who can afford their bail. Short jail stays cause people to lose jobs, housing, and time with their families.
We exist to level the playing field by providing bail assistance to people charged with low-level offenses who can't afford to pay for their freedom.
