BENEFITING: GRUNDY FOUNDATION
Grundy supports efforts to build and sustain an after-school learning center in Bristol Borough, an economically diverse community outside of Philadelphia, PA with a high percentage of ethnic/racial minority residents. Statistics reveal low levels of educational achievement attained by Borough adults and a high incidence of single-parent, female-headed households. “Latch-key” children living with both parents working multiple shifts or jobs predominate. The Borough school district, classified as impoverished, is the only district in Bucks County where all K – 8 students are eligible for subsidized services. Issues of low academic achievement and a high number of disciplinary infractions among middle and high school students are systemic. Students have self-reported feelings of low self-esteem and antipathy towards a community viewed as disorganized and disinterested in their well-being. A lack of compelling, affordable, and sustainable after-school programs and services fosters a growing sense of despair among young residents and frustrates Borough revitalization efforts.
