We need YOUR help this #GivingTuesday!
Pune, India - a city of nearly 4 million with 40% of its residents living under the poverty line in crowded urban slums. A shocking 2008 study on the water, sanitation and hygiene revealed that out of the 256 government schools in Pune slums, not a single one had soap available. Lack of proper sanitation in these slums disproportionately affects children, causing diarrhea, cholera and typhoid. In India alone, 1,600 children under the age of five die every day from these illnesses...
That's where we come in.
Our Pune operation will provide soap and education to 20 schools in the slums, serving 4000+ children. Our program is inclusive to schools educating children with learning disabilities, who face an especially high need for basic hygiene products and health education.
We will hire:
- 3 hygiene ambassadors to recycle the soap
- 3 teachers to conduct hygiene education workshops
- and 1 manager to oversee the operations on the ground...
Which will allow us to reach over 4,000 children across the slums of Pune next year.
But we need your help!
Here’s a breakdown on how your donation can have an impact:
- $75 provides 1 month of soap distributions to 1 school
- $150 covers 1 year of hygiene education and bar soaps for 1 student
- $180* pays for 1 year of a living wage salary and health benefits for a hygiene ambassador
- $250* pays for 1 full year of a teacher’s salary and all educational materials used in one classroom for disabled children
*Receive a hand-written thank you + progress update from one Hygiene Ambassador for any $180+ donation
*Receive a Holiday Gift Package for any donation above $250*
Remember that 100% of donations made on #GivingTuesday (Nov. 29) will be MATCHED! Your support means so much. Every donation – no matter what size – is appreciated.
Why Soap Recycling?
2 million children a year die from preventable hygiene related diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhea. Meanwhile, the hospitality industry throws away billions of bars of gently used soap into landfills every single year. Sundara connects the hotel soap waste to the need of children and families lacking access to the world's most cost-effective disease prevention method: soap.
