From the toxic waste created by the extreme extraction of tar sands destroying Indigenous communities in Canada, to toxins created by the BP Whiting refinery producing sacrifice communities in the Greater Chicago area, to the resultant catastrophic effect on our climate, the urgent need for a just transition away from fossil fuels to a 100% renewable energy economy is abundantly clear. We now have a unique opportunity to end the use of destructive fossil fuels and choose a clean energy future. The Midwest has a long history with the fossil fuel industry, but on May 15 we’re breaking free. We’re breaking free from an industry that’s driving the climate crisis and throwing our seasons out of whack. We’re breaking free from an industry that threads the Great Lakes region with pipelines and puts our communities at risk with refining impacts and petcoke piles. We’re breaking free from business as usual, and we’re taking on Enbridge’s tar sands expansion plans in our region. On Sunday, May 15 people of all ages will travel to the Whiting Lakefront Park near the BP Whiting Refinery and near the 2014 oil spill into the waters of Lake Michigan. Participants will gather for a rally and march. Kayakivists will assemble in Lake Michigan and activists will make it clear that the FOSSIL FUEL ERA is declared OVER, that we are BREAKING FREE FROM FOSSIL FUELS and moving forward together to a JUST TRANSITION of valuing ALL HUMANS as worthy of environmentally just use of our common resources of Water, Air and Land. Buses will come from states throughout the Midwest. Activists are touring campuses telling the tar sands story and building support. This is a major event for the Midwest, the US, and for our future. If you are able, please consider donating to help volunteers cover the expense of bringing this Break Free from Fossil Fuels event to the Midwest.
