Brain Injury Half Life
Organized by: Nathaniel Young
Hello! My name is Nathaniel Young. . I am 33yo now. When I was 16 I was a passenger in a horrific automobile CRASH, it was Labor Day '98. Just incase you're trying to do the math. ; ) The vehicle I was an unsuspecting passenger in took flight, off an Overpass located in Corona, Ca, at 98mph according to some Forensic scientists. The car came to a rest on it's roof after falling 27ft and sliding back up the opposing embankment. My 2 BEST friends in the entire world, brothers, were also passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle we were traveling in was a 90's Ford Crown Victoria. So the Driver, well remain nameless, and the younger brother, Mike, AKA-Duck, <---childhood nick names, we're pronounced DOA. Duck's older brother Bryan, AKA -Frog, passed away sometime later that morning. I was the rear right passenger and somehow survived. Not unscathed, of course. I was AIRLIFTED to a Trauma Center,Loma Linda University Medical Center, where I spent the next month of my life in a deep coma. Glasgow Coma Scale1, 2, or 3.. I forget. It was bad. Long story short, plus details slip my mind. I was released, against Dr's orders 6 months into my visit due to me contacting MRSA from the first hospital. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria that's become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections. So now I'm fighting another battle and the real battle hasn't even begun yet. ..Recovery. I had to relearn everything starting with talking, walking, reading, and writing. Yes. ..AGAIN! Basically, over a half life later things are finally starting to come around and this is the first chance I have had to actually, coherently, reach out and try to give back. Over the last 16 years while I have been rehabiliitating I've been keeping notes on what works for me. If you would like to assist in my never ending journey back to norm, please do so and I would be elated to share my story in more detail. If you have any questions, just ask. I've come a long way, and my journey is just beginning. Thank you so much for taking the time to read. So now I'm living with a wicked Traumatic Brain Injury, and yet still everyday I continue to strive for more. Ask me where I'm at today. What are my goals for life. What am I doing today? How am I coping? What is going on with Nathaniel 17 years post TBI? Just ask. .. = ) Thanks for reading!
