BENEFITING: BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK STATE INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
TBI (The Hidden Injury) is a complicated, individual/family life-changer to say the least. Largely under diagnosed at the concussion level its impact can be serious, as the science grows exponentially in the field. Going from Survival to 'Thrival' is a long, complicated and nonlinear journey for most. Although the analogy that "Life is a Marathon, Not a Sprint" often holds true and a TBI is no exception; a TBI survivor starts training with hellish new obstacles and a mind & body that simply does not react the same way a person spent a life learning. To thrive the TBI traveler must act utilizing herculean strength and fortitude to continually practice perseverance with patience, and finally rebuild a passion and purpose in their life. I was fortunate as many do not make it; and after ‘simply’ surviving a TBI, the long, hard, mountainously non-linear road to recovery lays ahead. The good news is that those folks who are fortunate enough to take road from ‘Survival to Thrive’ are Stronger in the Broken Places, and they carry the hard won wisdom and joy—stemming from the suffering & pain they have known—that was rightly earned at a high price: true life warriors.
