BENEFITING: American Red Cross

Bradley Coxe

Thanks in advance for all the birthday wishes in person and through social media and Facebook. Since you are already clicking through, please consider donating money to the Red Cross for my birthday, instead of and in addition to any presents or well-wishes. Despite what many people think, the Red Cross is entirely funded by private and local donations. They receive zero federal funds. The Cape Fear Chapter serves Duplin, Pender, Columbus, New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. In FY15 (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015) your Cape Fear Chapter provided the following vital Red Cross programs and services year to date: We responded to 147 local disasters, providing emergency assistance to 188 affected families (572 area residents). We participated in 53 community events and outreach activities, providing preparedness information to 16,355 Cape Fear area residents. We deployed 16 local relief workers to support the response to Hurricane Arthur (July 2014) and other domestic disaster operations around the country. We installed 1,158 smoke alarms with 10-year lithium batteries in at-risk Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin and New Hanover county homes to help prevent fire related injury, death and property loss. We presented disaster preparedness and safety information to 158 area youth in grades 3, 4 and 5 through Pillowcase Project presentations to 8 different classes in 2 New Hanover County schools. We supported 435 area blood drives through which 14,684 units of blood were collected and distributed to area hospitals to meet the needs of local patients. We assisted more than 1,000 locally based active duty, reserve and veteran military members and their families with emergency communications services and provided other support through outreach activities including Get to Know Us Before You Need Us program contacts, pre and post deployment briefings, and holiday card distribution through the Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign. We trained 4,329 area residents in first aid, CPR, babysitter's training, water safety and other lifesaving skills. We reached community members through digital and interactive training tools and resources via our website, mobile applications and information downloads which were accessed 316,293 times. We trained three community members in international humanitarian law, managed four international Restoring Family Links cases, and provided stewardship infomation to international relief operation and Measles Initiative donors. All of this was made possible through the dedicated service of 506 local volunteers and the generous support of our generous blood and financial donors. An average of 91 cents of every dollar donated directly supports vital Red Cross programs and services.
