Boston Scores is the largest school-based afterschool provider for the Boston Public School System. We provide urban youth with team-based soccer & enrichment programs that promote students' health & well-being, academic engagement, and civic leadership. Working against the achievement gap and health crisis facing our poorest neighborhoods, Boston Scores' participants see improved physical health, academic confidence and success, and become civically engaged. Scores' participants not only have the opportunity to pursue a better future for themselves, but they also learn how to become drivers of change in their communities.
Boston Scores is modeled on a program that Washington D.C. public school teacher Julie Kennedy created for her elementary school students to improve their health through soccer and academic engagement through poetry. We started out providing programming at just 6 elementary schools in 1999 and are now serving students in K-12 at 29 schools across Boston. Our programs are rooted in the team dynamics created through our soccer teams. These teams meet on the field for soccer practices and games, and also meet in the classroom where they engage in team-based experiential enrichment programs and service-learning projects.
