Blanket of Hope

Every 8 Minutes, The Red Cross responds to a disaster. You know these stories. You see them on TV, hear them from your neighbor, and you see these images on social media. Smoke filled streets, fire department personnel rushing into the face of danger to make sure everyone is out of harm’s way. Images of flames- shooting out of the roofs of homes. Frozen water lines- as fire crews work through Alaska’s unfriendly winter climate to serve our communities. These are the stories and images we hear and see, that linger in the back of our minds. These stories are everywhere. But then- when the fire is out, and the scene is clear- then comes a new chapter in the story. This part of the story is one of shock and disorientation. A story of a family who now stands cold, homeless and afraid. A story of a family who has lost everything they have ever owned, and sometimes- a story of tragic end. These are the stories of lives shattered in the blink of an eye. Stories that starts with: “Where will we go now?” Then, another chapter: This is our part. Home Fires are the number one disaster response that we are called to. At any time of day or night, trained Red Cross volunteers respond to the scene of fires and provide food, shelter, and emotional support to those affected. Red Cross Disaster Teams are there, standing with these families in the cold and dark streets, to wrap a blanket of hope around the shoulders of these families, as we comfort them and help them to begin their journey to recovery. Help us write the rest of this story. Give 10 bucks, and then share it. Pass this along. Ask others to help us write this story. With your help, this will be a story of hope. This will be a story of Alaskan’s, coming together to help each other. Make this your story; and craft it well.
