THE STORY:

CYCLES FOR CHANGE wrote -

The Twin Cities consistently rate at the top of rankings of the happiest, healthiest, and most livable communities in the U.S. Yet, these rankings mask pernicious inequities; communities of color face worse outcomes in health, employment, and academic success. Exercise opportunities, good food choices, and strong support networks are what create the healthiest communities. How can we support underrepresented communities, like low-income individuals and people of color, to ensure health benefits across the state are equitable?

Bicycling can be one part of the solution to making our communities more healthy, sustainable, and connected. Cycles for Change (C4C) creates a diverse and empowered community of bicyclists through free open shops, a youth apprenticeship program, bike grant program, adult learn-to-ride classes, and other community bike education classes. C4C engages underrepresented and under-resourced communities to ensure the health, economic, transportation, and environmental benefits of bicycling are shared equitably. We envision a future where communities of color and low-income communities in Minnesota no longer experience disproportionately high levels of preventable diseases, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

You can help Cycles for Change grow this bicycling movement by riding with us in our Bike-a-Thon Bike for Justice! Participants commit to raising money from their friends, family, and peers to support Cycles for Change’s work to support people in accessing the resources and skills to use bicycles as a tool to build strong, healthy communities.
