Beloved- Adjective: Dearly Loved.
- A group of people;
- a feeling of fellowship/sisterhood/brotherhood;
- “the container within which our longing to be is fulfilled” (Peter Block- Community: The Structure of Belonging)
The Beloved Community began in 2015 as a grassroots demonstration project to address the length of time individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) wait for services provided by the Developmental Disability Waiver. To quote Dave Murley, the following happened in the process:
“We were asked to build a program…and we built a community.”
The Beloved Community has continued to grow over the past four years through conversations and the shared experiences between young adults with IDD, their families, and other members of the community. It is an organization that is focused on vitalizing and engaging the capacity of every person—as well as the assets available within our community—to strengthen the community we live in.
The Beloved Community is about the relationships and connections that formulate in the ordinary and extraordinary moments. Beloved’s work is not limited to traditional ways of being, rather it is engaged in any opportunity that offers the capacity for connection and contribution by community members—opportunities that give a sense of belonging.
