Belize Student College Tuition
Organized by: Micah Williams
From 2006-2009 I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Belize. and have been fortunate enough to spend many summers there in the years since. One of the amazing young people I have had the pleasure to get to know over the years is Cindy Villafranco. Cindy, along with her 3 sisters and 2 brothers was a part of a 4-H club that I started in a village community in southern Belize. Though, honestly, they have become more like family. Though all of her family are wonderful people, and have shown great resiliency and fortitude, Cindy has always shown a truly impressive level of focus and dedication to her studies.
Sadly, I have just learned that after graduating from High School at 16, Cindy had to take a year off from school because her family could not afford the tuition for 6 Form (the Belize equivalent of community college). All of her siblings live at home, including her sisters' 2 babies and a third on the way. Unfortunately, this is only one of many struggles this young woman has had to deal with. Yet, her attitude has never soured, her her resolve has only be strengthened. Truly, Cindy is one of the most incredible people I have ever had the fortune to know.
When I spoke to Cindy this week, she talked of how she wants more for herself and wants to be able to further her education to help take care of her family. She plans to pursue her associates degree in Mathematics and hopes to continue on to university. Tuition is approximately US$1,000 per year, for the total of $2,000 over 2 years. By raising this tuition money, we can help give one amazing young woman the opportunity to pursue her dreams and help provide her family with greater opportunities in the future.
