BENEFITING: Bay Area
ORGANIZER: Bay Area
EVENT DATE: Apr 01, 2017
Friends and Family -
I've been involved with iMentor, an educational non-profit, since its Bay Area launch in early 2016. After the initial launch at two Bay Area high schools (250+ mentor-mentee pairs in Oakland and San Jose), iMentor is looking to expand its reach in the community and build on a successful first year.
iMentor was founded in NYC in 1999 and has served more than 15,000 students since inception. Starting in 2015, iMentor set out to expand its presence beyond NYC - the program launched in Chicago in 2015 and San Francisco in 2016. iMentor partners with schools in low-income and underserved communities to provide every student (beginning in their junior year) with a high-impact mentor relationship. The goal of the program is to ensure that these students have access to relatable mentors and can succeed in college and other post-secondary education. By partnering with public high schools and matching every student in the school with a mentor, iMentor leverages the community to reimagine the counseling function in schools.
The picture in my profile was taken at a mentor-mentee events at one of the Bay Area iMentor partner schools, Aspire Lionel Wilson College Preparatory Academy in Oakland. Over 50 students and mentors meet monthly through the iMentor program and go over key topics that are most impactful for the students. Next year, we will double the number of mentors through the addition of a new junior class!
We've started the iMentor Challenge to help increase awareness, share our stories and fundraise to so that we can help with the expansion of the program. Any help is very much appreciated, and I am excited and thankful to match the first $500 in donations
If you live in NYC, Chicago or the Bay Area and are interested in the organization, please feel free to reach out. There is always a need for more mentors!
