For more than 42 years Barefoot College has designed new ways to nurture and support a journey to empowerment, one village at a time, one woman at a time. We believe that light and learning are fundamental to a community’s transformation. We train women and girls from communities as solar engineers, innovators and educators, who then return to their communities to bring universal access to these essential forces.
1.3 billion people across the world still struggle every day to have access to light, education, clean water, reliable food production. We work every day to tackle that these problems for the most marginalised, remote and under threat communities around the world.
Barefoot College was built by and exclusively for the poor. Since the inception of our innovative rural college we have worked in partnership with marginalized, exploited and impoverished rural poor who live on less than $1 a day. The program helps lift them over the poverty line with dignity and self-respect.
This is your opportunity to partner with a transformative effort that has already impacted more than 700,000 lives in 72 countries. We need your donation to make a difference - even a $50 donation can bring light and learning to a household.
The communities who are currently most in need of our help in this upcoming year include:
- Forest corridor communities In Madagascar
- The coastal communities in Vanuatua hit by a cyclone earlier in 2015
- Post-conflict Central African Republic
- Post-Genocide Guatemala
- Refugee populations in Jordan
- Rainforest Communities in Suriname
Each of these communities or groups of communities, is under threat from the destruction of either war, global industry, or natural disasters. Their plight gets worse the longer they go without meaningful assistance.
In the next three years, we will improve the lives of another 500,000 people, nearly doubling the number of people we can serve! This exciting chance to make a global impact and spread the Barefoot approach, an urgent crusade that directly aligns with the UN’s 2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
As governments across the developing world see the efficacy of our program, we are in a dynamic, urgent process of scaling our effort to new areas that need it most.
Barefoot Regional Vocational Training Centres
Barefoot engineers, architects, water technicians, craftsman, midwives and many more, who have seen their communities transformed teach at these new campuses, spreading the skills they once learned to the next generation of those in need.
This year we've already inaugurated the first of five Barefoot Regional Vocational Training Centres in Zanzibar. The first 12 Solar Engineers have graduated from this new institution, propelling our biggest goal; to extend our reach to as many high-risk communities as possible.
Our goal by 2018 is to become fully global. We are creating new centers in:
- Africa (South Sudan, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Liberia)
- Latin America (Construction begins in Guatemala in 2016)
- Asia (Indonesia, Myanmar and Fiji)
Each new branch allows us to to educate and empower more people!
We need your help to accomplish these projects. The Barefoot Model has been proven to be effective worldwide - many of our early learners have become our greatest teachers, and the communities we have engaged with are thriving.
Every dollar donated to this campaign goes to the work required to continue to create such powerful results around the world. Global poverty is solvable, and food and water can be provided to every person. Make that happen with us, donate now.
We understand that each person reading this has different means, and we are grateful for contributions of every size. Whether you can offer a dollar, or much more, we want you to know how deeply the Barefoot College appreciates your taking action and supporting our work. On behalf of all those who will benefit, We Thank You
