Next prize: A year of postmedieval!
April 18, 2016
With your help, BABEL made a lot of things happen last year. In particular, we helped many people travel great distances to meet each other in person. Scholars, poets, artists, activists, and other oddballs hung out (at the BABEL Conference in Toronto, at Kalamazoo, and elsewhere) chatting and plotting, laughing and knitting, making and breaking.
We want more of that. And so we're asking you to help us:
1) Bring more early-career scholars to the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, through the James Paxson Memorial Travel Grant. In the past, there have been two $500 awards; starting this year, we are increasing that to four awards. ($2000)
2) Enable an interesting non-medievalist to come to Kalamazoo and participate in BABEL-related panels—and to encourage the conference to go in unexpected directions! ($500)
3) Send BABEL Ambassadors to conferences outside their fields which they might have difficulty getting funding for. They could bring new people into our fold, or spread the word of what we've done... ($1000)
4) Get early-career scholars (including graduate students) to the major conferences in their fields—the MLA, for example—to help them actually have a career. ($1500)
In addition to these travel-related proposals, we are also raising money for the ongoing Radical Conviviality Fund, which assures that that all BABEL social gatherings are open to all regardless of financial means. ($1000)
Consider the tangible, immediate and material ways you can help graduate students, NTT faculty, artists and others who do not have access to adequate professional development resources—as well as to conference enjoyment. Please contribute generously. We want as many people as possible to have access to everything the BABEL Working Group does. If we raise more than our goal, we'll help more people with the above programs—or dream up new schemes! (Perhaps you have suggestions?)
AND: Many BABEL members have donated prizes. If you contribute, you are eligible. Details will be posted!
(Please contact us if you are interested in offering a major donation to create one of the new travel funds—we can talk about naming it after you or after someone you're inspired by!)
This is a direct to organizer fundraiser.
