The Story

EVENT DATE: Mar 17, 2013

DEADLINE TO GIVE: Mar 23, 2013

In recognition of World Water Day, March 22, African Well Fund is challenging supporters to walk “A Mile in Her Shoes” by participating in a penny fundraiser. Our goal is to collect a mile’s worth of pennies (84,480 pennies, or $844.80, lined up makes a mile) in honor of those who have to walk miles each day to get water.

Each day in Africa, millions of people, particularly women and children walk for miles to get water. The chore of fetching water is no small task; water sources are sometimes miles away and the trip is sometimes made multiple times a day; water is heavy—a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds, women and children regularly haul 40 pounds of water per trip; very often the nearest water source is not even a clean one.

From March 17-23, AWF is asking supporters to pledge to donate pennies (or dimes, quarters or more) for their daily water usage. Participants can place containers like empty coffee cans or water bottles near toilets, sinks, water fountains and water coolers and encourage everyone to donate whenever they use water from that source.

Labels for containers may be downloaded here.
