EVENT: Maryland Gives More 2015

Community Crisis Services is utilizing Giving Tuesday as a way to make sure that our homeless community members have a safe and warm place to sleep, nutritious food to eat and the possibility of finding a brighter path forward. The Warm Nights Shelter is a 50-bed hypothermia shelter that operates annually from November through mid-April. It remains the only hypothermia shelter in the greater Metro DC region that serves families with children and individuals. Warm Nights is a partnership of Community Crisis Services, Prince George's County Department of Social Services and over 40 area faith-based organizations. The goal of Warm Nights is to ensure that no one freezes to death. The program is funded for a period of 23 weeks by the Prince George's County Government. Community Crisis Services utilizes other funding sources-including foundation and private donations-to extend the program by 8-10 weeks to ensure that those in need have access to a Warm Night during the often unpredictable weather. Guests are provided transportation, three nutritious meals, case management, emotional support and referrals to other social service organizations as needed. Each faith-based organization may provide additional services such as holiday meals, gifts, dental care, spa treatments, beauty nights or game/movie nights. During the past season, Warm Nights ran 40% over budgeted maximum capacity and our partnering organizations helped make this possible. The number of bed nights used has risen over 25% in two years. The program has provided thousands and thousands of bed nights to the area's most vulnerable residents and resulted in hundreds of families and individuals being moved into permanent housing
