BENEFITING: POSTPARTUM PROGRESS
EVENT DATE: Jun 22, 2014
My Story -
I gave birth to my beautiful daughter on November 30, 2013 - three weeks before her due date. I was experiencing preeclampsia and needed to be induced to prevent further complications. Everything went as well as expected during labor and delivery and my husband and I were over the moon for our baby girl.
Once we arrived home from the hospital and our new normal set in, I quickly became overwhelmed with every.single.emotion I had. I wasn't able to breastfeed for multiple reasons (including lack of support from the hospital!) and pumping further frustrated me. My kid was hungry and I had nothing but formula to feed her! Gasp! I felt like I was letting my daughter down on the ONE THING I needed to be good at. I realize now that my pre-pregnancy diagnosed anxiety and depression was rearing its ugly head in a new - and really mean! - form. My husband and I had many long, late-night talks about what I (and he!) was feeling, and decided to increase my medication with the help of my doctor. While I grieve the first couple of weeks with my daughter (who is a happy and healthy 6 months old now!) because I don't remember much but exhaustion, crying (me AND her), and feelings of helplessness beyond the "norm," I am BEYOND grateful that I actually did have a support system and my PPD/PPA didn't spiral into anything worse, as it sadly often does.
It may not sound like a glamorous or thrilling story, but if supporting Postpartum Progress with this climb means that no more new moms feel as empty as I did for those first few precious weeks of their child's life, then let's climb Stone Mountain a million times.

Climb Out of the Darkness is the annual awareness raising and fundraising event for Postpartum Progress, a nonprofit focused on supporting pregnant and new moms with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD, postpartum psychosis and pregnancy depression. Also, Climb Out of the Darkness kicks ass. Just so you know.
You don't necessarily have to climb a mountain, by the way, to join in.
- You can ride a mountain bike on a trail.
- You can do a nature walk.
- You can hike a mountain trail or walk along the beach. You can stand outside and let the sun shine on your face.
No matter what you do, we still call it your Climb, because it is a symbol of your climb out of the darkness of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, whether you are a long-time survivor or someone who is still climbing or someone who cares about the health of pregnant and new moms.
Help us raise money so that we can continue to raise awareness of how women are devastated by perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, make sure women know what they need to know about PPD, eliminate stigma and support the mamas who need it.
And now to get climbing!
