Kantaya mission is to promote quality education and holistic development for children living in extremely impoverished communities in Peru.
Kantaya believes in the power of education and has created after school spaces for dreams and learning conducive to developing happy strong children.
Peru assumes one of the lowest positions in quality of primary education worldwide, ranking 129th out of 137 countries.
Ventanilla district, where Kantaya is based, is the most impoverished community in Lima and Callao where 1 out of 3 children finish secondary education and only 2% has access to higher education. 60% of families live in a situation of extreme poverty and 40% of the population has at least one basic need unsatisfied.
Today, +1,000 children, between the ages of 5 and 15 have been benefitted in three after-school “Casitas Feliz” (Happy Houses) centers where teachers educate and empower children through an educational curricula (intellectual and socio emotional). The children attend 4 hours daily from Monday to Saturday all year round.
The novel coronavirus crisis has not stopped Kantaya’s dedication to continue helping children in need. Following its commitment, Kantaya is reinventing itself by launching Kantaya’s Remote Learning Plan that connects parents and children with Kantaya’s teachers. Kantaya assessed different ways to reach more than 270 children through social media platforms, a challenge where only 9% of extreme poor families have computer devices and an Internet access.
Kantaya’s work are based on three fundamental pillars: 1. Developing socio-emotional skills to reinforce children’s self-confidence and self-management, 2. Enhancing children’s reading comprehension and 3. Improving children’s mathematical skills.
The results are inspiring, children are motivated and committed to their education. They are happy feeling their teachers close and their parents helping them to get the best of their education during this difficult time.
