BENEFITING: Fetal Health Foundation
Did you know that one single click on an internet search result led us to save Ashley and Aspen's lives? Think about that a moment! 14 years ago we found out we were pregnant with our first child. Couple weeks later we got the shock of our lives as we were not only expecting our first child but our second child too. TWINS! How amazing.
Sadly a few weeks later, we learned that they were suffering from a syndrome called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This syndrome itself kills more babies per year than SIDS. Our prognosis was as grim. Options were to terminate the pregnancy or just allow nature to take its course as they died in utero. These are options?!?!?! We can just let our daughters die. No parent could do that, so we started researching and grasping for any bit of hope. We found that in one chance click that led us to life-saving in-utero surgery. At 21 weeks gestation, we flew to Florida where one of a very small handful of surgeons in the world performed the surgery that saved Ashley and Aspen.
Their survival inspired Michelle, additional parents who battled fetal syndromes, and myself to found the Fetal Health Foundation along with annual 5K run/walk events to raise money used for support, awareness, and research. Since inception, we have helped many thousands of families and provided seed funding to new therapies all designed in improving mortality and morbidity rates in babies with fetal syndromes.
Fetal syndromes take the lives of 200 babies a day. That is 170% greater than the amount we lose from breast cancer!!!
We are coming up on our 13th annual event, The Great Candy Run in Denver, and I ask you to please honor Ashley and Aspen and all babies and families who will battle a fetal syndrome and help us provide that same hope we found.
