THE STORY:

- With permission from Ari’s family

In March of 2016, together with Tava Wilson, I had the distinct honor of meeting Ari & Alix Diaconis.

This dynamic duo team driven by Ari’s zest for life, bright spirit and love of adventure had decided to embark on a mission that would take them bicycling more than 2500 miles cross country from Florida to California to raise awareness for POTS. He would call it the Pedal for POTS.

Pedal for POTS lasted nearly 3 months in which Ari garnered the attention of dozens of media outlets and raised tens of thousands of dollars for POTS research before he and Alix were honored with the very prestigious award of one group naming them “volunteers of the year”.

That long, arduous trip had its ups and downs but was filled with joy, freedom, flat tires, new friendships, cold nights and hot days.

Midway through their trip Ari & Alix stayed at Tava’s place in Austin for a well needed rest and recuperation as Ari’s body was definitely feeling the effects of the long, hard trip. He was driven by passion though and before long they were back on the road.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome had frustrated and limited Ari’s life goals. He was an accomplished attorney, budding scholar and prisoners’ rights advocate. He was also a percussionist who performed with Rubblebucket and at several renowned venues including Blue Note Jazz Club of New York. He was an adventurist, an artist, a genius, an inspiration….

Before March 2016, I knew nothing of this man named Ari but I knew that he was then and would always be an inspiration – after all how could anyone with POTS set such a goal with absolute ferocity and determination?

If he could exhibit such determination for this journey then surely Tava & I could throw a send off party to show OUR gratitude ….

Ari & Alix wore gratitude on their sleeves like the smiles on their faces. They were grateful and humbled by each and every person who came out to show their support; from the send off party, to each person they encountered along their route, and to the dozens that welcomed them when they arrived in San Diego with joy and love…… LOVE…..

Ari shared that in abundance but the true love of his life, Dunia made his eyes sparkle and he showed the world how much he loved her at every turn – with every beat of his heart

Please help us continue Ari’s plight with your donation to the 2nd Annual POTS PI DAY 5K which was started in memory of Tava’s daughter, Christina.
