Michael and his team are raising funds to help offset their travel costs to and from Arenales project site in Nicaragua. His team will help build the bridge's superstructure and commission the project. All donations are tax-deductible.
The community of Arenales and its neighboring communities have consistently been challenged in crossing the Gran Rio de Estelí, one of the largest rivers in Nicaragua. Though the community of Arenales is less than a kilometer from the Pan-American Highway,
the river stands between it and reliable, safe access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities. The municipality of Condega built a bridge in the early 2000s that failed in 2011. The walkway was rebuilt as a temporary solution in 2012 with the expectation that the next large storm would bring down the bridge once again. Thankfully for the residents of Arenales, the past three rainy seasons have been extremely mild, as the entire region has been experiencing record-setting droughts. However, the 2016 rainy
season has just begun and most locals are expecting it to make up for the recent years of drought. While the temporary bridge still stands today, its many missing decking planks have made it dangerous to cross, and the next large storm threatens to destroy the bridge altogether. This would leave the community of Arenales cutoff from schools, health centers, and jobs once again.
Estelí, the community on the opposite side of the river, is world renown for its tobacco and cigar production and many residents of Arenales must cross the river to work in the felds and factories. Without a bridge, Arenales residents will lose important income. Knowing the danger and the impact of inaccess, the municipality of Condega, with which Bridges to Prosperity has built seven bridges over four years, has prioritized a bridge at Arenales, and is determined to get it built before the next rainy season. Due to the size of the project, B2P is looking for a technically adept, dedicated industry partner to help make this extremely important project a reality.
