New York Apple Association (NYAA) -- and the 700 apple growers we represent -- is proud to support another state icon, the TCS New York City Marathon. NYAA has been a sponsor of the New York City Marathon since 1998.
As part of our role as an official Supporting Sponsor, NYAA has given their guaranteed entries to people running the marathon for a variety of reasons; from running ‘just for the health of it’ to running in memory of a specific individual.
After the 9/11 tragedy, we concentrated on getting local fire fighters and law enforcement personnel to run ‘in honor of those who came running’. We have since then included active and retired military personnel, health providers, food industry advocates and a variety of health-conscious runners.
In 2013, we learned about CrowdRise and their involvement with charities. That same year, one of the charity recipients NYAA chose was Feeding America. Feeding America member food banks in New York State helped feed victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. These storms hit New York and New Jersey just a week before the 2012 NYC Marathon and for the first time ever the NYC Marathon was cancelled. NYAA then redirected the more than 200,000 apples for the 2012 Marathon to Feeding America to support the efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
This is the 3rd year we are combining our ability to provide runners a guaranteed entry to the NYC Marathon and our runners' abilities to raise funds for their favorite charity through CrowdRise. In this way, friends and family of the runners can show their support by donating to an individual runner's choice of charity, in addition to "cheering them on". Last year our runners raised a combined total of $10,995!
Marathon participants can munch New York State's iconic McIntosh apples at various marathon-related activities and at the marathon finish line.
