New York Apple Association (NYAA) -- and the 700 apple growers we represent -- is proud to support another state icon, the TCS New York City Marathon. NYAA has been a sponsor of the New York City Marathon since 1998.
As part of our role as an official Supporting Sponsor, NYAA has given their guaranteed entries to people running the marathon for a variety of reasons; from running ‘just for the health of it’ to running in memory of a specific individual.
After the 9/11 tragedy, we concentrated on getting local fire fighters and law enforcement personnel to run ‘in honor of those who came running’.
Last year, one of our two charity recipients was Feeding America. Feeding America member food banks in New York State helped feed victims of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Because of the storms that hit New York and New Jersey a week before the marathon, for the first time ever the NYC Marathon was cancelled. NYAA then redirected over 200,000 apples to support that effort.
This year we have decided to let the recipients of our guaranteed entries select the charity of their choice to raise funds for. In this way, friends and family of the runners can show their support by donating to the runners choice of charity, in addition to “cheering them on”.
You can munch New York State's iconic McIntosh apples at various marathon-related activities, including at the marathon finish line, as well as at a grocery store or farm market near you.
