I am riding again this year for a very special girl in my town named Catherine.
Just to give you a little update on Catherine, she is a 14 year old girl that is 14 months into her leukemia treatment. She is in the maintenance phase of the protocol which consists of monthly lumbar puncture, IV chemo and daily oral chemo meds. This phase is scheduled to last until July 2015. Even though presently she is doing well, she has had many setbacks in the past year and she was hospitalized 11 times in 2013 for various side effects and even shingles.
Catherine has not been able to go to school since February 2013 and has been tutored at home. Right now the doctors are working to tweak her oral chemo meds to get her white blood cell count in a good place so she can safely be around other people and get back to school and other fun activities like going to the movies and the mall. Fortunately she is extremely resilient and has a great attitude and is typically in good spirits.
Some of the people who keep Catherine’s spirits up are the many volunteers and organizations to help make clinic visits and hospital stays more enjoyable. The Hole in The Wall Gang team will visit the hospital and do craft projects, play games and even have movie nights for the kidsl. Catherine really likes when they are around and they have definitely had an impact on her during those many hospital stays.
