BENEFITING: ASPIRO INC
EVENT DATE: Sep 27, 2014
Andy (left in photo) will run the 2 mile Awareness Walk route continuously for 4 hours. Yes, 4 hours. For every two mile loop he will push a different individual with disability, giving them a chance to ride along.
Here's why he's doing it:
"The reason I chose to do this is largely based on the relationships I made with ASPIRO clients over the 5.5 years that I worked there. These clients had an immense impact on me and if there is anyway I can help create more opportunities for them I will. Running has long been a passion of mine and has become a source of inspiration for others. It is one of my strengths and the best possible way I can raise funds and give ASPIRO clients a chance to participate in the Awareness Walk through the Greater Abilities Program Ride Along.
Having worked at ASPIRO and running on my own led me to an organization called myTEAM TRIUMPH. This organization is an athletic mentoring program for individuals with disabilities. We do several events per year similar to what is going to take place at the walk. Generally three or four Angels (able body athletes) run with one Captain (individual with a disability) in an event such as the Cellcom Marathon or Bellin Run. My role with myTEAM TRIUMPH is as the coordinator of the Greater Abilities Program which is an exercise mentoring program for the captains of myTEAM TRIUMPH. I focus my attention on captains similar to the clients at ASPIRO. This meaning those who have the ability to walk or do things on their own. Most of the captains in myTEAM TRIUMPH use the help of a racing stroller in events. The Greater Abilities Program was created to give captains who didn't need to use of a stroller a chance to participate in things such as road races and attending classes at a fitness center.
I encourage anyone who wants to run with a client/captain to do so. It will be a great experience you will never forget!!
