As most of you know, my sister was diagnosed with anti-NMDA encephalitis this year. Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is a disease (discovered in 2007) that occurs when antibodies produced by the body’s own immune system attack NMDA receptors in the brain. NMDA receptors are proteins that control electrical impulses in the brain. Their functions are critical for judgement, perception of reality, human interaction, the formation and retrieval of memory, and the control of unconscious activities My sister's experience changed our lives. Today she is on the road to an amazing recovery, but there is still a lot of unknown as to what was the root cause behind her illness. There were no major warning signs or symptoms leading up to her hospitalization. Many patients have been misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. On October 15, I will be running a half-marathon in San Francisco to raise money to support the Autoimmune Encephalitis Alliance. In addition to your contributions, my company, Pacific Gas & Electric will math up to $1000! Together, we can support research, spread the word and help educate a community on this rare disease. No contribution is too small. Thank you all for your continued support!
