American Lung Assoc., Northeast - Running for Air!
Just over two years ago an amazing lady lost her battle with lung disease. The immediate thought when you hear “lung disease”….she must have smoked. She wasn’t a smoker. In fact, for most of her life was one of the most active, energetic and healthy women I knew. The last several years of her life felt cruel and unfair for a woman so full of life. My family and I watched our favorite lady struggle to do the most basic things like walk down the driveway to get the mail…..get up from a chair at family dinner…and eventually just take in a breath of fresh air. Those things...those things we can so easily take for granted having the ability to do every day...they mean independence, they mean dignity, they mean hope for the future; and so many people are robbed of it with a terminal illnesses like lung disease. I’m not the first person to lose someone important to me, and will not be the last. Loss of someone you love, no matter what the circumstances, is so incredibly hard. I consider myself and my family so lucky to have had her in our lives for as long as we did; as it does not fall short on me that so many people are not as lucky.
My grandmother taught me many things, but most importantly she taught me through her own life and her disease, to go out and actually live life without regrets or excuses…to never settle. So it is only fitting that I give back in her honor by checking off a bucket list item - 26.2, no excuses.
It is a priveledge to run for such great a cause!
