BENEFITING: Nourish International EVENT: Nourish Giving Challenge 2017 THE STORY: Chapters: American University Partner Organization: MOCHE Inc. Project Description: Nourish AU will be working alongside MOCHE Inc. to improve the quality of life in the Las Cocas Community surrounding Trujillo, Peru by improving water supplies, contributing to the creation of a community center, and performing a health and heritage survey of the community. Project Details: Nourish is working alongside MOCHE Inc. to improve the quality of life for the people in the Las Cocas community, which is located just outside of Trujillo, Peru. The indigenous community is surrounded by a plethora of ancient ruins from the Incan empire, which is still standing after thousands of years. It is an incredible site for the archaeologists that visit between the months of June and August for digs. However, the communities that surround these sites often find themselves in dire situations. Water and sanitation systems are often non-existent or too close together to be safe. Walking to get water uses precious daylight hours. Electricity is scarce, making homework and working after dark nearly impossible. For the farmers surrounding the area, the difficulties add up, forcing them to look to the ruins to sack for profit. By working alongside MOCHE Inc., a local non-governmental organization, Nourish AU will assist with building a water and irrigation system that will save families hundreds of hours of walking each year. Additionally, the team will help to finish the roof and electricity within the local community center to give schoolchildren in the area a place to do homework in the dark, significantly increasing their educational opportunities. In addition, Las Cocas will be able to hold meetings, dances, other events that tie the fabric of the community together. Our final project will be visiting many of the homes of Las Cocas to perform a health and heritage survey. These will be used by MOCHE Inc. in the future to improve their programs in the community, ensuring they are both valuable and needed by Las Cocas residents. Through these three programs, we will impact over 200 people of Las Cocas, working alongside them to finish important institutions in their communities. This empowers the residents of the community to care for and improve the institutions over which they have ownership. The partnership with MOCHE Inc. will last for two years, providing the opportunity to return to Las Cocas in Summer 2017 to monitor the progress and use of what we build. The results of the survey will also be used to guide our work in the summer of 2017 with MOCHE Inc. This 2-year partnership contributes to sustainable solutions for MOCHE Inc. and the people of Las Cocas. About Our Partner: We are partnering with MOCHE, Inc. which is an NGO that was founded by two archaeologists who had worked in rural Peru and wanted to develop ways for the local communities to combat poverty. MOCHE Inc. has been pioneering innovative ways to empower rural Peruvian communities by constructing schools and community meeting spaces, roads and water systems, as well as more services in exchange for preservation of local archeological sites in the community areas. By marrying archeological preservation and social development, MOCHE Inc. has created an amazing system that has expanded to local communities such as Las Cocas and Nourish AU are ecstatic to partner with them.
