March of Dimes Springfield

THE STORY:

Our daughter Ella Riley was born full-term on March 20th, 2008. Due to complications at delivery caused by her umbilical cord, she spent 6 days in NICU undergoing experimental treatment to slow the progression of brain damage. On March 25th, 2008 the NICU doctors informed us that the treatment was not successful and that she would not be able to sustain life naturally. She died peacefully in our arms a few hours after taking her off life support.

Losing a child can be a very isolating experience as it’s very difficult to openly talk about with others who haven’t experienced the same type of loss. Holidays, anniversaries, days that would’ve been milestones come and go and we as grieving parents have nothing to show for it but the loneliness of not being heard. Having only lived 6 days, the only memories we have of Ella are the days in NICU, praying at her bedside, the many visitors, and then the quiet two hours we shared with her at the end of her life. We have no milestone photographs of her sitting up on her own. Trying sweet potatoes for the first time. Taking her first steps. Saying “mommy” or “daddy”. This never settled well with our family for obvious reasons, but it also wasn’t fair to Ella. It was important to us that her memory live on.

Being part of the March of Dimes has given our family a place to belong and place where Ella’s little life can live on and help garner support and awareness for other families. March of Dimes gives us a voice and sense of security to know that we’re not alone. Our hope is to end the stigma of miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss by encouraging other families to talk about their own experiences, and encourage those who haven’t experienced such losses to ask, be interested, and most important - be supportive. We relish in the opportunity to talk about our daughter and we wish for every grieving family that they can lovingly and openly remember and talk about their little one. Increased awareness may not prevent outcomes like ours, but it will help our babies maintain a place in this world.
