Theater Communications Group (TCG) is holding its national conference in Los Angeles in June. They titled the conference What If...? as in What if the American theater could hold a prominent place in the funding priorities of all Americans? or What if artists could make a living wage? or What if there were no more theater in America? or… you name it. We noticed that, though the conference is dedicated to an art form, there was going to be a dearth of artists at that particular table.
TCG put out a call for proposals for conference Breakout Sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for theater professionals to come together and learn from each other, debate issues affecting the field and move the art form forward. So, former Oasis Theater Company member Wendy McClellan proposed a panel: “What if… Artists do it Themselves?” and brought three writer-driven collectives together to, well, do what artists do best – create and (possibly, hopefully) provoke a conversation that puts artists back at the center of the art making.
The collectives participating are:
DogEar Playwrights http://www.dogear.org
Workhaus Collective http://www.workhauscollective.org
The writers are:
13P: Rob Handel, Kate E. Ryan
DogEar Playwrights: Jennifer Maisel, Lina Patel
Workhaus Collective: Dominic Orlando, Victoria Stewart
Wendy McClellan will be moderating.
All of these artists are committing to this independently. These organizations are not capable of funding their participation. They must raise the funds to make this important panel happen. Oasis Theater Company, with its commitment to cross-cultural collaboration and history of community building within the theatrical landscape, wants to help them. Join us. Contribute today.
