EVENT DATE: Sep 20, 2014
One of our favorite things to do on a free weekend is wander downtown and say hello to our favorite cats - Bandar and Sukacita! Bandar and Sukacita are Sumatran Tigers cubs born at the zoo last year as part of the species survival plan. SSP is a coordinated effort between zoos that work to manage and maintain genetic diversity in the captive population of threatened and endanger species. In some cases, these efforts may be the species' only chance for long term survival.
Due largely to poaching and lost of natural habitat, Sumatran tigers are one of the world's most critically endangered species, with as little as 400 left in the wild. Each Sumatran tiger cub born represents hope for the species.
Friends of the National Zoo raises money to support the zoo and its programs.
