Agassiz Village is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization whose sole mission is to send at-risk Boston area youth to our two week sleep away camp in Poland, Maine for a life changing summer.
We offer children the opportunity, in a summer camp environment, to develop and practice leadership and life skills that will impact their future in education, family, career, and in their communities. Our programs are an investment in the future, to inspire and enable all children, especially those who need our support the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible leaders.
While we are all experiencing the affects of this pandemic, it is generosity that has the power to bring people of all races, faiths, and political views together across the globe to create positive changes in the lives of others.
That's why when the pandemic hit, Agassiz Village jumped into action.
Providing Resources: We've complied a list of valuable information and resources that can help you navigate through these unprecedented circumstances. You can view and download the full packet here or directly from our site.
Reaching Out: We have been making phone calls to parents and campers. We want to know you are safe and well, and share any resources you may need during these trying times. We've also been checking in with staff members and alumni who are on the front lines fighting the virus outbreak and making a positive impact in various different ways. Read about some of their stories on our new Blog page.
Staying Connected: We have been connecting with you on social media, sharing opportunities to connect virtually, and creating activities and games to keep brains active. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, andLinkedIn to share in the fun!
Food Drive: We are launching our first ever food drive for under-resourced families. We understand that COVID-19 has significantly impacted children who are food insecure and had previously relied on healthy meals provided to them at school. We've created an Amazon Wishlist that includes nonperishable food items that you can purchase and have sent directly to our office so that we can distribute care packages to families in need. Please let us know if you're in need of food supplies or if you'd like to volunteer to help with our food drive.
Agassiz too has been severely impacted by the pandemic. We had to postpone our annual Maine Course fundraising event, which provides much needed funding to support our programs. Agassiz applied for the Cares Act SBA loan on day one but our bank was slow to process the application and the government ran out of funding. We are still hopeful we will be awarded this critical funding in round two.
Our board continues to meet weekly learning, listening, discussing and analyzing how/when camp can open and what it might look like this year. We are looking at everything from potential delayed start dates, to screening tests, to program changes, to virtual camp. As we wait for the State of Maine, the State of Massachusetts, the American Camp Association, and the CDC to provide essential guidance, we continue to think about the families we serve and what is best for them and ultimately that will be our guide in any decision we make.
If the government says we can’t operate our camps this summer, then we will provide a virtual camp for our kids. We are working on a virtual program now that will include our social and emotional and leadership skills training. We do know that for under-resourced families with little technology at home, we may also need to provide tablets in order for kids to be able to access the program remotely. For those where technology poses the biggest issue, we will also be offering a mentorship program where mentors will provide one-on-one supports to children.
Your gift will go a long way supporting our continued efforts to help at-risk youth through this difficult time and will sustain our organization for the future.
Help us change a child's story by giving youth the opportunity to attend Agassiz Village's fun, safe overnight summer camp that helps kids to develop and practice leadership and life skills--a transformative experience that impacts their futures in education, family, career, and community.
Agassiz Village has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of at-risk children whose families could never have afforded to send them to camp. Our goal is to expand our village of passionate people who believe our children are our future and who are willing to invest their time and money to continue this legacy into the next century.
