I joined the OASIS staff as a crisis pregnancy social worker and group facilitator of healing and support circles for child witnesses of domestic violence. The vision of Dr. Diane Thibodeaux, Founder/CEO to deliver comprehensive yet culturally meaningful domestic violence and family support services that engaged both faith community leaders and secular systems caught my attention. Since my arrival in 1989, I have been fortunate to see this vision played out with concrete outcomes for victims and abusers. An annual average of 68 Victim survivors continue to receive crisis counseling, group and individual support, shelter, court, and housing advocacy, and emergency assistance that could mean the difference between life and death. Children who witness the violence between their adult caregivers get age-appropriate support in our OASIS Kidsplace (O.K.). The support circle often extends to schools and afterschool programs.
WHAT WILL YOUR GENEROSITY DO? A donation of $720.00 will cover the cost of an evening meal for Moms and their children participating healing circles -- 18 sessions a year. Sometimes a meal at OASIS is the only food group members can count on during the week. Money for personal items, diapers, gas and bus cards are often needed. Traditional social service resources are limited in their ability to fully assist victim survivors and their cihldren. The cycle of abuse often keeps them isolated from family and reliable support networks not associated with the abuser.
OTHER services include--
- Non-standard 24 hour/7days a week child care (toddler to school age)
- Crisis intervention for homeless women and youth
- Youth violence prevention and training/education for faith leaders
- Resources, information, and referrals
- Volunteer/internship training and mentorship
