We Did It!!!
November 07, 2016
BENEFITING: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
ORGANIZER: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Thanks for checking out my fundraising page! I've signed up to run 26.2 miles this November in honor of my cousin Hunter, with all funds going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Hunter and I were weeks apart in age and were always very close. We shared the same intense energy and competitive drive—qualities that would more than once rile our siblings. The last time I saw Hunter, I was on my first business trip in Chicago and spent the night at his house outside the city. The next morning, we had quiche and coffee in our formal business attire; sitting at his kitchen table like two grown adults, catching up like we were still two kids on the Cape.
Hunter took his life last June. He had just graduated college and was beginning a promising career. He was on the cusp of adulthood. My family has never experienced a greater heartbreak or shock than this, and we continue to feel the reverberations on a daily basis.
Suicide had always been an abstract concept to me. Over the past year, I’ve begun to peel away at the many layers of this complex issue. I now better than ever understand the grave reality and mystery of suicide, and recognize the intense need for mental health awareness.
I’m running the NYC Marathon in November for Hunter and for his family—to celebrate his life, to bring awareness to the tragedy they’ve dealt with every day since last June and to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). AFSP raises awareness, funds scientific research and provides resources and aid to those affected by suicide.
I would greatly appreciate any support in my journey to the finish line!
