THE STORY:

Weizmann Institute of Science wrote -

The Weizmann Institute of Science is uniquely positioned to meet the Revlon LOVE IS ON Challenge because we conduct intensive research on all three of the women’s health issues in need of support: women’s cancers, diabetes, and heart disease.

Our goal: early prevention, improved diagnosis, and better treatments for these conditions in order to help all women, everywhere, live longer, healthier lives.

For example, with regard to women-specific cancers, Weizmann Institute scientists are working toward a hormonal intervention that could lead to ovarian cancer remission; those dedicated to defeating breast cancer include Prof. Hadassa Degani, developer of an FDA-approved method of diagnosing the disease without the need for invasive, painful biopsies.

And we have multiple teams studying diabetes and associated conditions – in fact, heart disease is a serious complication of diabetes that is known to have higher mortality rates in women than in men. The two – diabetes and heart disease – are often part of a constellation of symptoms called metabolic syndrome, which also features high blood pressure and obesity. This syndrome affects close to 50 million Americans, and women with a common condition, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), are 11 times more likely to suffer from it. Weizmann scientists aim to achieve nothing less than definitive cures.

The Weizmann Institute’s culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration – bringing together biologists and mathematicians, geneticists and physicists – makes it specially qualified to advance research in all three of these major women’s health issues, always aiming at prevention, early diagnosis, and new therapies for the health, well being, and LOVE of women everywhere.

The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science is a community of dedicated people who share a common vision in support of the Weizmann Institute.
