The Weizmann Institute of Science, based in Israel, is one of the world’s top-ranking multidisciplinary research institutions, focusing on fields such as health and medicine, with a strong emphasis on cancer; creating new technologies; protecting our planet, such as by developing environmentally friendly fuels; and promoting the education and careers of women in science.
The Institute has a demonstrated, longstanding commitment to investigating women’s health issues – not only health conditions unique to women, but also how diseases in general affect women in particular. Our scientists research gender-specific cancers, osteoporosis, ovarian function, fertility, and more. Our goal is to not only gain greater understanding of these conditions, but to develop new and better treatments to help women worldwide live longer, healthier lives.
For example, with regard to women-specific cancers, Weizmann Institute researchers are working toward a hormonal intervention that could lead to ovarian cancer remission; those dedicated to defeating breast cancer include Prof. Hadassa Degani, developer of an FDA-approved method of diagnosing the disease without the need for invasive, painful biopsies.
In addition, multiple teams study diabetes and associated conditions – heart disease, in particular, is a serious complication of diabetes that is known to have higher mortality rates in women than in men. The two – diabetes and heart disease – are often part of a constellation of symptoms called metabolic syndrome, which also features high blood pressure and obesity. This syndrome affects close to 50 million Americans, and women with a common condition, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), are 11 times more likely to suffer from it. The scientists’ goal: nothing less than development of definitive cures.
The Weizmann Institute’s culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration – bringing together biologists and mathematicians, geneticists and physicists – makes it uniquely qualified to advance research in all three of these major women’s health issues – breast cancer, diabetes, and heart disease – always aiming at prevention, early diagnosis, and new therapies, for the health, well being, and LOVE of women everywhere.
The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science is a community of dedicated people who share a common vision in support of the Weizmann Institute.
The Weizmann Institute of Science, located in Rehovot, Israel, is one of the world’s top-ranking multidisciplinary research institutions. Noted for its wide-ranging exploration of the natural and exact sciences, the Institute is home to 3,800 scientists, students, technicians, and supporting staff. Institute research efforts include the search for new ways of fighting disease and hunger, examining leading questions in mathematics and computer science, probing the physics of matter and the universe, creating novel materials, and developing new strategies for protecting the environment.
