Hello! With the Chicago marathon completed (I did finish, standing!), I wanted to share with you the fundraising results.  My goal was to raise  See more

THE STORY:

I'm running the Chicago Marathon to raise funds and build awareness for Grand Rapids based, Van Andel Institute and would be so grateful for your consideration in supporting VAI's life changing work!

Like many of you, cancer has impacted my family and friends.  In addition to having had three grandparents diagnosed - my wife Afton is a lymphoma survivor, my mom Carole is a thyroid cancer survivor, and my mother-in-laws Marsha (breast cancer) and Debbie (kidney cancer) are survivors.

In January of this year, my friend and colleague, Ed, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Once again, this awful disease hit close to home.  Thankfully, as of August 10 after a courageous fight that included two surgeries, chemo and radiation - Ed beat cancer and is in full remission!  Interesting to know, Ed took up running in 2015 and his doctors attribute this exercise as playing a significant role in his capacity to endure treatment and expedite recovery!

Each of these individuals is alive today due to advances in biomedical research and treatment of cancer and I am so grateful! This run is in honor of Ed and all of those impacted by this disease.

Because of these experiences and our deep desire to find a cure, Afton and I have long been supporters of Van Andel Institute.  While located in West Michigan, Van Andel Institute is the leading research institute for thousands of cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Because of VAI, patients and families will have hope for the future.  Research is expensive and government funding of scientific research is at a historic low. It currently takes more than 10 years and a billion dollars to bring a new drug or treatment from the laboratory bench to a patient’s bedside. We need your help to make this process go faster.

Purple Community is Van Andel Institute’s grassroots community awareness and fundraising program that connects individuals, schools, teams, and businesses to the resources needed to join the fight against cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.  When you support Purple Community, 100% of your funds support Van Andel Institute scientists who are studying more than 20 different diseases. Thank you for your consideration of a gift toward this run, and for your investment in hope for the health of our children to come.
